I got to the market, and it really is quite fun. On one side is the new stuff, and the otherwise is legit vintage and old school stuff. I challenged myself to only buy one thing, which was tough, but I did it. I bought a super fun, £3 scarf. I'll try to take a picture of it for this post (which I am currently writing part of sitting in a Starbucks, where the wifi is whack, and the tea is delicious). Here's a picture of the market.
(Scarf added!)
Let's have a chat about the Tube for a moment, folks. So, it's terrifying at first. The first day I got here, I won't lie, it made me angry. It made no sense, it's like, how can you have so many lines? As it turns out, the long flight, layover, being stuck on the runway for over an hour, the lack of real air, the abundance of lack of knowledge and the tired were playing a real part in that feeling. You guys, the tube is brilliant. It's still scary because it is SO underground, but it's brilliant. I get it now. I don't get it enough to teach someone else, but I get it enough to have gone on a ton of lines today, and made it early to where I'm meant to meet someone.
Here's where I went today on the Tube:
Waterloo Station (Northern line) > Tottenham Court Rd. Station (Central line) > Liverpool St. Station (Circle line) > Moorgate Station (Northern Line) > Kings Cross St. Pancras Station (Victoria line) > Highbury & Islington Station (Victoria line) > Warren St. (Northern line) > Waterloo Station
I'm a damn pro... except I did go the wrong way at one stop and let a little English accented swear out, but that's all part of the fun!
It really is wonderfully organized, though there is a lot of walking in some cases between station/line changes.
At one of those stops, I stopped for lunch. I went to a place called DF Mexico. Holy shit. Yeah, it requires that I curse! I had chicken tacos, and you guys, outrageous! I didn't have any sides, no drink, just these tacos. They were, dare I say it, the best tacos I have ever had. Also, the design of the space was brilliant. Yes, I've said brilliant three times in this post, but it's all warranted. Look at this place! I fell in love with it from the exterior, and then the interior and food made it that much better. I don't know if it's the only one in town, but if it is, I will have to go back before I leave.
Now, you know how you run into people from the past in the most random ways? Well this lady Lynn and I grew up together in Mt. Albert-ish, and saw each other for the first time in about twelve years, five years ago. As it turns out, she and I caught up on Facebook recently, and she lives in damn London! We went out tonight and we had an ab-so-lute blast! And because only weirdos don't eat tacos twice a day, I did just that! We went to a place called Wahaca, after we walked around the Highbury & Islington station area for a while, saw lots of shops, and then went down to this canal where people LIVE! You guys, they live on these long weird boats that I have never ever seen before. They're allowed to stay for I think seven days for free, and then they have to pay £25/day. Look how neat these are.
This last picture is of some pretty cool looking offices, and they're partially under water. So fun!
(Oh my god, I'm typing this while I sit in my room here, and one of the other AirBNB people snores. Sweet lord.)
Moving on.
So we walked around for a while, it was awesome, but let me circle back to the meal. I had three things, tapas style. One was a tortilla with cheese and potato, so essentially a giant perogie, but better. The other thing was some type of flat taco situation, with beef, beans and lettuce, with grilled cheese on top. You guys know that delicious cheese that's left on the edge of a pizza bun or nachos? Yeah, that's the stuff, but they added it on purpose to the top of the thing. Holy. Hell. The third thing was Tocitos, which I can't spell, but they were chicken ones, covered in lettuce, salsa and cheese. Wow.
We did some more random walking around, and look at the fun things I got! Please pay close attention to the 7-DAY SUPPLY of 30ml bottles of Nutella. Yeah, you did read that correctly.
Not really sure how shipping these back home will work. I may be the lady in the London Post Office shoving spoonfuls of Nutella into her face for fear of them being left behind. Judge if you must, but half of you would do the same thing... okay fine... just me then.
Also you guys, I think I saw a Banksy!
And finally, one more super fun thing.
One day I will design something with a swear word in it! Also, that tag with a note on it reads, "Please don't wipe your hands on the shelves afterwards!"
Oh, humanity.
Alright, to bed I go. Back tomorrow with some Buckingham Palace in the daytime, and whatever else the world sees fit to fill the day with. Night, night!
